All the hype recently about the Bobby Brown story had me reminiscing about some serious dance moves, Gumby haircuts, and Hammer pants. I was a big B. Brown fan and with the revival of his music being played across the airways, I took the time to really listen to the lyrics. Mostly because I like to dissect songs that my kids listen to and this new skill I have acquired had me taking apart the words to, Every Little Step I Take.
Now don’t get me wrong, the words of that song are very questionable, but in my older and wiser age, I listen to music a lot differently and the lines of the song that stand out to me are, “Every little step I take. You will be there. Every little step I make. We’ll be together.” The more I thought about these words it reminded me of this scriptures, Psalm 23:4, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou artwith me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” (KJV) Every step I take, whether little, big, or scary, God is with me.
God is always with us and I am realizing that even more now because I know the things I have survived was of no power of my own. Knowing He is with me has given me the assurance that no matter what I go through, everything is going to be alright. This is true because God’s plans for me are to not harm or hurt but to give me an expected end which is what Jeremiah 29:11explains so clearly to us.
Every step we take God is there. Through tragedy and triumph, God is the constant figure along our life’s journey. We have his presence with us everywhere and that is comforting, even in the worst of times.
Not to take away from the king of R&B but long before Bobby Brown was a twinkle in his parents eyes, there was song that gave the same reminder that God is always with us, In The Garden, where the chorus is, “And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own, and the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.”
See this song starts out with someone coming to a garden alone but by the end of the song, they realize they were never alone because God was with them the entire time. He was right there walking and talking with them. They shared their relationship in the garden.
The power in having a relationship with God is knowing that He is going to be there with every step you take. You may not be walking around a garden, but we are all taking strides in this thing we call life and God is taking strides with us.
Want to start a new job? Don’t fear, God is with you. Want to leave an abusive relationship? Know that God is going to walk with you every step of the way. Want to travel the world as a missionary? God will be with you even across the globe. Every step you take, He will never leave you nor forsake you.
So, the next time you hear Bobby’s little ditty on the radio, remember that God is with you always. Every little step you take, He will be there. Every little step you make, the two of you will be together.
