Romans 8:31 says, “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” This verse starts out with a question, “what then shall we say to these things?” What things is Paul referring too? The root of this question has the answer in verse 28 preceding it. “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28) This verse brings out the concept of predestination. You must be called by God to be in His eternal family. God chooses who He chooses. God knew before the beginning of creation who would choose to love Him. Those are the elect people that He has called to do His will. God’s plan for your life has been woven into creation and that is why all things work together for your good (Romans 8:28).
It is always a very comforting and encouraging thing, especially in the midst of the various trials and ordeals of our lives, to know that there is someone who is “for us” and who, therefore, cares for us and desires the best for us. When we are children we take comfort in knowing that our parents are for us. One of the things which makes a friend a true friend is that aspect of their affection that shows them to be for you when the going gets tough. As husbands and wives, the marriage bond of intimacy of fellowship is most deeply appreciated and enjoyed when each spouse confidently knows the other is for him or her regardless of what happens. Understanding and appreciating that someone is for us is a wonderful thing, and it should wondrously work in the details of our lives to produce needed comfort, encouragement, confidence, peace, rest, joy, and a host of other things which stabilize and gladden our hearts.
So“Who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31) The answer to this is “no one.” Sure we can be persecuted, talked about, mistreated and hurt here on earth, but eternally we will live and bask in the Glory of Christ forever. God is the only one who can destroy us eternally and praise His name that He is for us. There is nothing in the world that can prevent us from walking on that path to completeness and victory. If God is for us, nothing can be against us. All we must do is walk on the path God has designed for us.
Does He rule your heart and mind today? Will you fulfill God’s purpose in your life? You can make that decision today… and it will change your life for eternity… let the dream giver come into your heart. If you truly believe in Jesus Christ and have made Him Lord and Savior of your life, you can have confidence in Romans 8:31. Stay strong in the Word and pray to live a life worthy of the calling.
